For Lunar New Year (Tết) we went to Ho Chi Minh City (“HCMC,” previously, Saigon, before the war) and Cần Tho two cities in the south, along the Mekong Delta. We had been to HCMC previously, but not Cần Tho. Since I am still exhausted by COVID-life and distance learning, here is our trip, once again, in photos…
Vietnam war era tank. Sam loved Cu Chi tunnels, he’s been studying the Vietnam War. Ruth on the go. “Emmeline Billy Goat soldier!”With the Viet Cong. Our first stop was the Cu Chi tunnels. A vast tunnel network just outside HCMC where the Viet Cong lived and fought. The tunnel network includes homes, hospital, dining halls, nurseries. Sam inside one of the tunnels. On the firing range at Cu Chi.
Just like in 2016, we decided to do a boat ride on the Mekong, but with double the kids, just for fun…The best part of the boat trip was a stop at a local “noodle house” where we got to sample a couple local dishes (the crispy noodle pizza👌😘) and each kid even got to help cut the noodles! Making friends. Street chickens. Wet markets for miles. Pointing out the creepiest seafood options. Back roads of Cần Tho. Waiting for his Xuc Xich (“hot dog” on a stick).Night markets are the best. This……turns into this. A surprisingly good octopus-seafood fritter thing. A cheese bun. In Can Tho, we mostly swam in the pool and explored the streets and delicacies at the local night market.
