Hanging out in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC, Vietnam).

We are currently traveling through Vietnam.  Our first stop was Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) and the surrounding area, including the Mekong Delta.

Chad’s friend recommended a local driver who knew all the best sights and especially the best places to eat.  We were lucky to have him since we have found very few people speak English.  Downloading a Vietnamese translation app is a must, and that barely got us by.

While in Ho Chi Minh we visited the following- all of which we highly recommend:

  • Cu Chi tunnel system in Cu Chi (just north HCMC)
  • Ban Tanh night market
  • Local coconut candy “factory” (southwest of HCMC along the Mekong boat departures are out of My Tho)
  • Mekong delta & surrounding area
  • City center; including colonial post office, cathedral, & sight of the US airlift out of Saigon
  •  War Remnants Museum

Some of the sights are very somber.  But they are worth visiting to get a full understanding of how U.S. intervention in the area impacted the people of Vietnam.

We have found Vietnam to be beautiful and inviting.  On to Hoi An!

Arrival at Ho Chi Minh.
Local Pho restaurant.
Vietnamese wedding cake dessert.
Sam trying the “cake.”
Ate abite then realized it wasnt cake.
Jack tried it, too.

Sipping coconut milk at the Ban Tamh night market.
Exploring the tunnels of Cu Chi. Used by southern supporters of the North Vietnamese during the war.

The mopeds are worse than Bangkok and cars were driving on the sidewalks.
Visit to coconut candy factory.
Very tasty candy.
70 percent coconut, 30 percent sugar. Super delicious.
Grind the coconut; mix the coconut with sugar syrup, let it harden and wrap.

Quick stop for lunch. Pick a fish, catch a fish, fry a fish, eat a fish.

Along the Mekong-it is all jungle down here.

Driving through HCMC.
Local barber shop.
War Remnants Museum-a very sad chapter in world history.

Reunification Palace.
Phones in the cabinet room of the reunification palace.
Southeast Asia hair-dont care.
