Bangkok Snake Farm (Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute)(Bangrak/Silom, Bangkok, Thailand).

This place is kind of awesome.  Especially, if you are a dinosaur-lizard-snake obsessed little boy.  Today, the boys and I spent the morning at the snake farm at Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute.  The institute is part of the Thai Red Cross Society and is located off of Rama IV a few blocks from Lumphini Park.  The farm is designed to study snakes and improve knowledge and attitudes about snakes.  The institute also extracts venom in order to create vaccinations.  It is the second oldest snake farm in the world and the first snake farm in Asia.  It is open to the public seven days a week.

During the week there is a snake venom extraction exhibition and a snake handling show.  On the weekends, they only offer the snake handling show.  Below is information on opening, hours, show times and pricing.  You can also find information about snake farm at their website:  http://www.saovabha.com/en/snakefarm_service.asp

Shows were in English and Thai.  Sam is still spouting off knowledge he learned: “Mommy, the man said that farmers kill the snakes and eat them.” “Mommy, I think this is a spitting cobra.” “Mommy, if a cobra bit T-Rex he might die.”

Sam and Jack LOVED the snake farm.  I really enjoyed the snake handling show and hope I get a chance to make it to the venom extraction at some point.  You definitely get up close and personal with the snakes!

[I posted some videos of the snake handling show at the bottom of the post, enjoy!]
