Krabi: Getting There and Day 1 (Koh Hong; aka Hong Island).

Sam, Jack and I are in Krabi for a few days to celebrate the Thai December holidays.  We are LOVING Krabi.

Getting to Krabi via plane is a quick, cheap trip.  The flight is a little over an hour and getting through check-in and security for domestic flights is pretty painless.

Krabi Province is just over 700 km from Bangkok, along the Andaman Sea.  Phuket Province (another major beach hub) is to the west of Krabi, across Phang Nga Bay.  The Phang Nga Bay is full of many beautiful islands frequented by tourists, including:  “James Bond Island” (a James Bond Movie was filmed there), Phi Phi Island, The Four Sisters Islands and Hong Island (I do not know the Thai names for some of these islands).  Because both Phukket and Krabi lie along the bay, the islands are frequented by both sets of tourists which can lead to crowded beaches.  It may have been the off season–we did not really have an issue with crowds.  Due to the distance between the various islands, you can typically only make it to one island per day.  Most of the tour services offer speed boat or long-tail boat option.  We chose to go the long-tail route because a speed boat would not have been enjoyable for any of us (least of all me).  We chose Hong Island because it was the closest of the popular islands and we wanted as much time on the island as possible.

We made several pit stops during the day to many of the small beaches along the coast of Hong Island.  We also took a very short kayak ride through a lagoon.  An extra guide was assigned to our kayak to help out (I told the tour company a few days beforehand that I would be alone with two small boys).  I knew Sam and Jack would have a great time.  They have fallen in love with the water and the beach thanks to our many, many weekends at the pool and swim class at school.  Krabi is insanely beautiful, the water is warm and clear. It could not have been a better day (unless, of course, Chad was here with us).
