To be honest I never thought we would go to Asiatique. I thought it might be a tourist trap. But I am SO glad we went. The boys had the most fantastic time. We didn’t get home until 11 pm because I just couldn’t get them to leave.
We typically spend our Saturday nights at the Siam Paragon mall. We can go to Siam to get pizza (for the kids) and sushi (for us). It is a good break from the Thai food we eat every day. I did not feel like going to Siam today and Jack had taken a really long, really late nap. So, I figured we could use a night out on the town. I knew we could find pizza at Asiatique… so, Asiatique it was.
Asiatique is a large open air market on the bank of the Chao Praya. It used to be the site of the East Asia Company, a dutch company that had business in Bangkok and ports along the river. The complex now houses tons of restaurants, even more shops, a ferris wheel, fun cars and other entertainment. We took the BTS to the Saphin Taskin (Sathorn Pier/Central Pier) stop. From the Central Pier you can take a free shuttle boat south down the Chao Praya about 10 minutes to the market. The free shuttle caters only to Asiatique and was easy to use.
Unlike a lot of markets in Thailand, I thought Asiatique , despite being very busy and full of people, had a lot of space and a lot of room to walk around. Which is helpful when you are keeping an eye on two energetic kids. It also had a lot of fun stuff for children. Sam and Jack loved the ferris wheel. But, they REALLY loved the fun cars. The market is bright and open and fairly clean. Overall, it was a really fun night and I would definitely go back again.
