On our second day in Chiang Mai we took a trip to the Baan Chang Elephant Reserve. The Baan Chang Elephant Reserve is one of the many elephant sanctuaries located in Chiang Mai province within driving distance of the city center. Many of the elephants at Baan Chang were taken from other locations and zoos throughout Thailand after they were injured, aged or were no longer useful to their owners. You are able to book a trip to Baan Chang and spend 1-3 days with the elephants. We booked a one-day trip which allowed us to feed the elephants, take an elephant training class, ride the elephants bare back (they do not allow seats at Baan Chang since these are harmful to the elephants), and bathe the elephants. It was one of the best experiences we have had in Thailand. The boys loved everything about the elephants.
