The bad news: we may be stuck in Thailand a while longer (while we wait for our travel funding to get approved in mid-November). The good news: we may be stuck in Thailand a while longer (we have Halloween, October break and plenty to keep us busy through October). Today we went to Dusit Zoo and Dusit Palace in the Dusit area (northwest corner) of Bangkok.
Dusit Zoo is a pretty small zoo by U.S. standards and most foreign travelers would probably believe it isn’t very well kept. If you are looking for the San Diego Zoo in Thailand — you simply aren’t going to find it. This is the third zoo we have been to in Thailand and it is not bad. It is a manageable size and has all of the major animals: asiatic black bears, hippos, white lions, tigers and giraffes. Oddly enough, it does not have any elephants. Sammy was very excited to go to the zoo today — but he was even more excited that he got to go to the zoo with his new stroller. He has been doing a lot of walking lately! There are very few places where strollers are useable.
Dusit Palace is located a couple of hundred meters from the Dusit Zoo. The Palace was constructed between 1897 and 1901 by King Chulalongkorn or Rama 5 (Rama being the Thai title for king). King Chulaolongkorn got the idea to build a new palace after a trip to Europe (previously, the monarchy had used the Grand Palace). The european influence is reflected in the exterior and interior architecture of Dusit. Photos are not authorized inside the palace and visitors must dress conservatively (pants for men; long skirt or Thai sarong for women). I did steal a few photos from google images to provide some insight into what the interior of the palace looks like. It really is magnificent and very european.
